THERMAL INSULATION TEST RIG AS PER ASTM

Nowadays in many applications, use of the high temperature is required and it is to be maintained for the required time period like in furnaces.

This concept has the same concept. It is required to design the experimental setup for testing of thermal insulating material at about 900 0C. So, the basic requirement is to produce this much high temperature and maintain it.

Using ASTM (American Standards for Testing Materials), the design of the experimental setup has been prepared. Capacity of the heater required is calculated on the basis of heat transfer at 1000 0C.

Thermocouples have been inserted for the temperature measurement throughout the heating plate.

Two main circuits are required. One is to make to average temperature measured by the thermocouples. And second one is contactor require to cut in/cut out the heater automatically at the selected temperature. And after finalization of the circuit, manufacturing of the setup is to be done.

Components
v  Heating plate (S.S Plate)
v  Wood (Insulation material)
v  2 Electrical heater  (Strip type)
v  Cover box (M.S. plate)
v  PID Temperature controller
v  Contactor
v  3 PIN  Plug(6 amp,240 V)
v  K type Thermocouple
v  Wire (16 gauge)
v  Bolt and Miscellaneous

Construction and Working of RIG
·       Made a box from S.S. Plate with comfortable dimension because the conductivity of material is depending on the temperature and also area.

·       Set up Strip heater, Contactor, PID temperature controller using bolts and Miscellaneous as given in circuit diagram.

·       First put M.S.Plate on the heater.
·       Than set a temperature range according to ASTM(for WOOD  80 to 150).
·       Take temperature reading according to time.
·       Than load the material.
·       Take a temperature reading according to time.
·       So that the variation in conductivity can be calculated by the given equation.

            K= Q/(A.dt)
K = Thermal conductivity, w/m.k
Q = Rate of heat flow, k
A = cross Area of insulation material, m2
dt =variation in temperature at same time between temperature with material and with out material.
